Personal style, shopping challenges and a customized silk dress.

Can you describe you style in words?

My style is pretty casual and comfortable. Comfort is something I value over aesthetics. I like simple classic designs and natural colours that suit my complexion. Sometimes people say my style is classic or chic. I like the French style of dressing so maybe that influences me at times.

Can you describe your wardrobe?

Recently my wardrobe has become more multifunctional and sustainable. I don’t buy clothing that is in season or follow current trends. My wardrobe is a mix of gym wear and day to day clothing that I wear to work. It’s simple and a little chic. There are still some items I need to add but right now I’m pretty happy with it.

What is your challenge when it comes to finding the right garments?

I’m not particularly tall so sometimes I find it difficult to find dresses, skirts and trousers that fit well. Or I have to end up getting them altered, which sometimes puts me off buying the item.

How do you tackle this?

I always have to try on items therefore I don’t tend to buy much clothing online. Luckily Amsterdam’s sustainable fashion brands are expanding so there are more options for buying slow fashion brands. There are also more brands who are offering custom made clothing so I really like this! I have a pair of made to measure trousers which I love, and I took the measurements myself and ordered online!

You have customized a garment from Studio Heijne collection. Why did you choose that specific garment?

Yes, I have the Day Silk Dress! I love it and it was perfect for the event I wore it to recently. I have also had a lot of friends see me and say they loved this dress and the colours. I think they were trying to encourage me to wear brighter clothing more often! It’s loose and perfect for warmer climates.

How did you customize it?

I added short sleeves as I was planning on wearing the dress at an event in Tanzania in the midday sun and wanted some protection on my shoulders. The size was custom to my measurements. I wanted a fabric that was brighter than I normally wear but still complemented my colouring. The colours also matched well with the landscape and terracotta colour of the soil and buildings built from locally made bricks.

What is the result?

A well-fitting and stylish dress which suits my wardrobe. It can be casual or dressed up depending on how you wear it.

I feel very comfortable and chic wearing it! It will always be known as my Tanzania dress! I can’t wait to add another custom dress to my wardrobe. Maybe this Summer….
