Read about why we are introducing custom made jeans and trousers (scroll down for info about the launch) It all starts in the fitting room…
The frustation with fitting rooms.
I stand in the cold lights of a dressing room with no less than 7 pair of jeans with me. The goal is to find those perfect ones, that hugs my behind and makes me love my own legs. Or at least find a pair of jeans that makes me feel like a power woman! But the mirror on the wall is no longer my friend. I leave the dressing room feeling sweaty from trying on every single one of the jeans. Slightly frustrated and with no new jeans to bring home with me.
There are some places that are nice and there are other places that are not so fun. And then there are fitting rooms. Like bad magic they turn my excitement for getting a new garment into pure frustration. The trouble is not only the long queues, the unflattering light or the curtains that does not close properly. The biggest issue is the absurdity that all women’s bodies should be categorized into a handful of different sizes. Sizes that are not based on the average woman’s body but on ideals. The fact is that most bodies are too short, too tall, too curvy or too thin to match the ready-made-garment sizes.
“Nothing fits my body”.
The result is either that you end up not feeling good about your body. Or paying for garments that don’t really fit. It’s no wonder that you might leave the store with the feeling that “nothing fits my body”.
Does this feel way to familiar? As a fashion scientist and with a big passion for garment making I spend a lot of time thinking of fashion, garments and how they effect our lives. That’s why I decided to meet up with Wendy, founder of Studio Heijne. I ended up working at Studio Heijne. Custom made garments just made sense from both a sustainable and personal perspective on fashion. I want to wear garments that make me look both look and feel good.
“46% of the 2000 women that were asked, struggle with size and fit issues when looking for garments.”
A survey in the US was conducted in 2017 and revealed that 46% of the 2000 women that where asked, struggle with size and fit issues when looking for garments. It is hard, especially when ordering garments online to get the right size on a garment and even harder to get the right fit. Therefore I believe in Studio Heijne’s custom made garments based on measurements.
Why standard sizes are a mess.
Your body’s shape and measurements may change over the years and also the sizes in store change, the measurement of a size 36 today is much bigger than a size 36 in the 1970s. On top of that there is the struggle that a size “36” in one store may in measurement be a “38” in another store. Each brand decide for themselves what measurements that goes for each size. Instead of trying to keep up with the different sizes we believe that garments based on measurements is the way to go.
Trousers are the biggest fit challenge
Last autumn Studio Heijne did a customer survey asking our customers what garment with good fit they struggle to find in stores and the answer was clear – trousers. 77 % of all customers stated that trousers is the garment they struggle the most with. Therefore we have spent this summer researching sustainable materials. We looked into whats makes a perfect pair of custom made jeans and tailored trousers. We also spend many hours looking for sustainable qualities for both denim and tailored trousers. Our main focus has been to find a perfect fit. A fit that is flattering for the female body and that make women of all shapes feel like that Heijne trousers are their very favorite pair of trousers in their closet.
